Abstract
A field experiment was carried out at EI Karada Water Requirement
Research Station. Kafer EI Sheikh Governorate, Egypt, during 1999 12000 season to
study the effect of surge irrigation and length of borders on amount of applied water,
consumptive use, water use efficiency, and yield of wheat comparing with continuous flow irrigation.
Results revealed that, surge irrigation treatment had significantly effect on
the seed yield, where it produced the highest seed yield. On the other hand, the length
of borders treatment 40 m length irrigated by' surge produced the highest seed yield
that was 2151.16 kg/FE;d. " The surge irrigation treatments caused water application
reductions, which were 19.10, 9.19, 9.00, and 7.20 % of continuous irrigation
treatments for 20,40,60, and 80 rn borders length, respectively. Moreover, the same
treatments recorded the highest water application efficiency, the highest water use efficie'ncy.'                                       .
